Alysia Judge is an award-winning journalist and one of the UK’s premier speakers and broadcasters when it comes to video games.
She’s a regular host for BAFTA’s Game Awards and masterclasses and currently creates popular videos for Netflix’s UK YouTube channel.
Now the games expert, 28, talks to Bex April May about mental health, the PS5 and why she’s a fan of OnePlus
What’s your gaming set-up like at home?
I’ve got my PlayStation 4 and a big Sony 4K TV, as well as a Nintendo Switch, an Oculus Quest VR headset and a gaming PC I built myself. I recently got the WD Black P50 Game Drive SSD from Western Digital for my PS4.
You just plug it in via USB, and you’ve immediately got two terabytes more storage – the equivalent of about 50 games. It makes console gaming portable too.
I’m a Sony girl through and through so it’ll be the PS5. I’m excited for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales because the first Spider-Man game was amazing. It’s going to be cool to see where they take that franchise. I’m also going to be playing Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
That will really make use of the PS5’s DualSense controllers, which have way more functionality and lots of haptic feedback, so you’re going to feel the rumble when you interact in-game.
You recently voiced a character in the detective game Paradise Killer. What was that like?
It was really fun. It’s this open-world, first-person murder mystery set in a psychedelic world. You play an investigator who is trying to figure out why the entire council of this island were murdered.
My character’s called Judge. She’s an immortal who has scrubbed herself of all ego to become a truly impartial justice. Finding the voice of someone who’s excited by justice but also has no ego and is thousands of years old was fun, if a bit weird.
You’re an advocate for games being a force for good. What are some of the mental health benefits of playing games?
Lockdown has been such a great example of the importance of video games in connecting us.
My most important bit of tech in this period has been my SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless gaming headset. It’s how I’ve connected with friends when we couldn’t see each other. There’s that stereotype of gaming being a lonely activity but they’re so interactive.
You’re into your smartphones too – what’s your current favourite?
I’ve got the OnePlus 8 Pro. I’ve been a fan of OnePlus for years because they have amazing spec at low prices.
The OnePlus 8 Pro is its most expensive phone but it’s brilliant. An amazing display, and 5G.
What current tech blows your mind?
Ray tracing. Whenever you see a next-gen game that looks beautiful, it’s all about the ray tracing. It’s a rendering technique developers use to perfectly mirror inside a video game what light does in real life, using real-life physics.
We’re going to see a lot of stunning games.
