Tesla may be the all-conquering electric car company but it’s got a new rival pulling up alongside at the traffic lights and revving its electric engine.

Lucid Motors, a company based in California, has just unveiled the Lucid Air electric sedan that cruises silently into Tesla Model S territory.

The car has been in the works for a while and was originally going to be shown off at the New York International Auto Show. Then the coronavirus pandemic showed up and wrecked everyone’s plans.

The Lucid Air has a battery capacity of 113kWh compared to the 100kWh inside a Tesla Model S. That translates to an epic 517-mile range, significantly besting the 402 miles you’ll get from Musk’s motor.

It’ll go 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of 168mph.  There are two electric motors (one on each axle) which can deliver up to 1,065bhp.

However, anyone wanting that level of electric driving will have to fork over $139,000 (£107,000) for the Lucid Air Grand Touring model when it comes out in 2021. It also goes up to $169,000 (£130,000) for the ‘Dream Edition’.

Perfect then, for when you’ve got a few hundred grand going spare.

The base model won’t have that same kind of range, but will be much cheaper at $80,000 (£62,000) when it arrives in 2022.

Step inside the cabin and you’ll see some luxury and cutting-edge tech befitting the price tag. There’s a 34-inch curved ‘Glass Cockpit’ 5K display in front of the driver and a touchscreen for controlling the infotainment system.

Lucid has worked with Amazon to put the Alexa voice assistant into the car, so it can be used for navigation, phone calls or streaming media. The car’s system also uses facial recognition to create secure personalised profiles for each driver.

The battery sits underneath the car, so it looks like there’s a pretty spacious feeling inside the cabin. And check out that expansive sunroof.

The fast-charging capabilities of the Air mean it can add enough juice for 300 miles in 20 minutes.

In an effort to compete with Tesla’s ‘Autopilot’ autonomous driving, the Lucid Air has a suite of 32 sensors covering ‘vision, radar and ultrasonics’. The company says it can provide level 2 and level 3 autonomous driving technologies when owners take hold of it next year.

But perhaps most importantly, it just looks cool and futuristic.
