As far as gadget launches go, the annual iPhone event in September is pretty much the summit of the mountain.

Even non-techy folk tend to take note when Apple unveils the newest iPhone, even if just to see how the camera is progressing.

This year, things are likely to be very different. Because of coronavirus, any plans Apple had for a big public reveal to a chorus of whoops and cheers will have to be shelved. Instead, we’ll likely have a virtual reveal similar to what Apple did for WWDC back in the summer.

Apple usually gives very little notice when it comes to the iPhone launch, but there are several reports we could find out the date this week.

Mark Gurman, from Bloomberg, posted a tweet at the weekend suggesting the tech giant will reveal the date for the upcoming iPhone 12 event this week.

This backs up an earlier tweet in August from serial Apple leaker Jon Prosser that also suggests we’ll see a lot of Apple action this week.

For context, last year’s iPhone 11 event was held on September 10 and assorted media outlets were told about it 12 days earlier on August 29.

Interestingly, the rumours suggest Apple will announce a new version of the Apple Watch and iPad Air separately than the iPhone 12.

Rather than unveil all the products in the same event, Apple may simply issue press releases to announce the new tablet and wearable later this week.

That would free up time during the event to talk more about the iPhone 12 and its variants, as well as new headphones and a smaller, cheaper version of the HomePod.

Apple may need extra time for the event because, if rumours are true, it will produce four versions of the iPhone 12 this year.

These include the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Max, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Screen sizes are predicted to be 5.4-inches, 6.1-inches, 6.1-inches and 6.7-inches respectively.

Arguably, the most important update iPhone users will be looking for is the introduction of 5G capability. More and more areas of the country are receiving 5G signals now but not all phones are able to make use of them.

Anyone wanting a new phone that’s going to last them the next several years will want to think carefully about whether or not having 5G on board is important to them.

Of course, if the upcoming iPhone models aren’t of interest, there’s always the excellent new iPhone SE that offers great performance at a fraction of the price of a ‘Pro’ model.

At any rate, we should know more by the end of the week.
